Though now a distant memory, my time at Northwood is one I reflect on with warmth and gratitude. Some of my fondest memories come from our cultural immersion days, when families brought in food from their own cultures for the class to share, and together we learned about the richness of world traditions. I also remember going out to the garden; learning how to plant flowers, examining leaves on the ground, and trying to identify which plants they came from. At Northwood, my curiosity was met with unwavering support from the staff, and I largely attribute my interdisciplinary academic pursuits today to the foundation that the school provided. Beyond nurturing a five-year-old academically to the best of its ability, Northwood also instills in its students the values needed to become functioning members of society. In high school, I often questioned why my parents chose to send me to a Montessori school at such a young age; but today I appreciate the holistic environment that Northwood fostered, one that intrinsically shaped who I am today.

Attending Northwood Montessori from the ages of two to six was one of the most formative experiences of my childhood. In Mrs. Vasquez’s classroom, I discovered a love for learning that has remained ever since. Northwood fosters an environment that is nurturing yet empowering, encourages curiosity, creativity, and confidence in every child. It’s truly a personal and individualized experience that you can’t get anywhere else. Mrs. Vasquez and other Northwood teachers still remain close family friends to this day! Looking back, I realize how deeply those early lessons in independence, coordination, and self-sufficiency shaped who I am today. Northwood Montessori didn’t just prepare me for school, it prepared me for life beyond my education. I’ll always be grateful for the foundation it gave me and the wonderful memories I carry from my time there.

My time at Northwood was foundational in building my experience as a lifelong learner and encouraged me from a young age to be curious. I learned to try on my own first before asking questions, and how to ask the right questions. I was exposed to other children from varying backgrounds, allowing me to flourish at an international school after Northwood. The curiosity that Northwood instilled in me allowed me to go on to study chimpanzee behavior and biopsychology at Tufts, and I am now working in the field of reproductive health and applying to medical school.

I was a student at Northwood Montessori until the age of six, and I still remember my time there so fondly. It isn’t talked about enough how truly impactful the first six years of life are, and my experience at Northwood shaped so much of who I am today. I had the privilege of completing the full three-year cycle, and I left feeling confident, curious, and fully prepared for public grade school. Being in a Montessori environment gave me the freedom to explore my interests, build independence, and develop a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Even after I aged out of the program, I loved coming back to visit because the school felt like such a special community. Northwood Montessori gave me a genuine love of learning that has stayed with me throughout my life, and one day, I hope to be a Montessori parent myself.

Northwood Montessori has held a special place in my heart since I began there in 2002. It was where I first learned how to think independently, build confidence, and develop a genuine love of learning. I made my first friends at Northwood, some of whom I still keep in touch with today. The strong sense of community and care I experienced there shaped how I connect with others and approach the world. The lessons I learned extended far beyond the classroom, and they continue to guide me throughout my life. Because of my experience at Northwood, I have always known I want my own children to attend a Montessori school. I am incredibly grateful for the foundation Northwood gave me.

Northwood Montessori was the first school I attended, and it is the school that has had the greatest impact on me so far. I learned and successfully commanded academic and life skills at Northwood. In addition, I learned about the trust and guidance between a teacher and student through the respect, responsibility, and freedom of my choices and actions. My confidence and decision-making skills were all nurtured by my Northwood Montessori teacher, Miss Vazquez.

Northwood is one of only two AMI Montessori schools in the Greater Houston Area. This AMI designation signifies educational integrity and oversight that assured I would exceed expectations, learning all that I needed and more to continue on my educational journey after graduating from Northwood Montessori, AMI. My Northwood teacher, Miss Vazquez, is still the most patient, inspiring, and respectful teacher I have ever had. Each morning, I was always so excited to go to Northwood, to the extent that I wished my school day was longer! Whether I was learning something new, enjoying recess in the huge playground, or talking at lunch with my friends, I was always smiling inside and out. Northwood educated and prepared me so well that I advanced an extra grade when I entered my new school after Northwood graduation. The stable and motivating learning environment of Northwood was the key to so much of who I am and have become.

I am now a freshman in high school. I still have friends from my years at Northwood and I still rely on the skills that Northwood taught me. Northwood will always be a part of who I am. I am so proud and thankful that my parents chose to give me the gift of attending Northwood.
